Bektashi Dervish Axe Turkish, Bektashi Dervish Axe; made of steel, silver, copper and wood, dated A.H. 1241/A.D. 1825-26. Length: 132 cm Weight: 1420 g. Large axes with crescent-shaped blades were originally designed for use in battle, but they also served as symbols of authority for a dignitary or religious mystics (Sufis or dervishes). This late example is decorated in silver with Qur'anic verses and poems in Turkish by Hatayi (Shah Ismâil I). Shah Ismâil I, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, was a poet who wrote under the penname, Hatayi (Khata’i), he composed poetry in Turkish. His poems recited for centuries in Alevi-Bektashi circles of the Turkish Empire even under the rule of Ottoman dynasty.
